Instructions for Use for
TRACOE® comfort
Tracheostomy Tubes
These instructions for use contain information and instructions for
physicians, nursing staff, patients and relatives who act as carers.
They apply exclusively to the TRACOE comfort tracheostomy tubes.
Please read the notes before using the product for the first time and
retain the instructions for use for future reference.
Product for single-patient use: The TRACOE comfort tracheostomy
tubes are medical products, which are destined for use with only a sin-
gle patient. Multiple uses for one and the same patient are permitted.
1. General Description
The flexible transparent TRACOE comfort tracheostomy tubes are
available in different diameters, lengths, designs and sets, including
tubes for long-term use, for tracheostomised and laryngectomised
patients. The tubes are DEHP-free and latex-free.
The shape and length of the inner cannula and outer cannula are
individually adapted to each other. Therefore, you must make sure
that the inner cannula is used with the outer cannula that belongs to
the same set.
The size reference corresponds to the internal diameter of the outer
cannula at its narrowest point (i.e. lower end) in mm. If inner cannulas
are used, the internal diameter is reduced by approx. 1 to 1.5 mm.

For safety reasons, we recommend that you always have two
TRACOE comfort tracheostomy tubes available as a replacement.
Also for safety reasons, one of these tubes should have a diameter
that is 1 to 2 sizes smaller than the tube that is currently being used.
The smaller tube should be used in the event of problems during the
reinsertion of the tube with the originally selected size.
The replacement tubes should be stored in a dry clean condition in
a ventilated container. The tubes must be protected from sunlight.
Product Variants
Product variants can be manufactured according to your requested
size in order to ensure the best possible functionality and comfort
for the patient even for complicated anatomical and physiological
conditions. For the respective order forms please visit our website

Please Note:
Alterations to the TRACOE comfort tracheostomy tubes may only
be carried out by employees or agents of TRACOE medical GmbH.
Any alterations that have been made by third parties will result in the
warranty and liability obligations becoming void with immediate effect.
This applies to damage that has been caused to the products as well
as any consequential damage resulting thereof.
2. Design of the TRACOE comfort Tube
The flat neck flange with eyes for fixing the neck strap is followed by
the cannula tube, which carries the airflow and is tapered towards the
tube end. This way, the insertion of the tube into the tracheostoma is
made easier and the tube end does not permanently touch the wall
of the trachea.
If inner cannulas with a perfect fit are part of the product, they are
inserted into the outer cannula. Safety aspect: This design has the
advantage that an inner cannula, which has become blocked by
secretion or crust formation, can be removed from the outer cannula
while the patient’s airway remains secured through the outer cannula,
which is still in place.
All TRACOE comfort tubes are delivered with a neck strap for fixing
the tube and ensuring its safe position. This is a disposable product,
which must not be reused.
Speaking tubes have small perforations in the outer cannula. The
corresponding inner cannulas have matching bigger openings. The
openings, which are positioned over each other, allow the exhaled air
to flow into the upper airways.
In order to improve the phonation, the TRACOE comfort plus speaking
tube has two additional holes in the inner arch in addition to the fenes-
tration in the outer arch of the tube.
The small perforations of the outer tubes are too small for inserting a
suction catheter, and this is a deliberate design in order to prevent
injuries to the tracheal mucosa.
3. Intended Use
TRACOE comfort tubes stabilise the tracheostoma of a tracheostom-
ised or laryngectomised patient and keep it open.
The initial selection of the tube and insertion of the TRACOE products
must be carried out by a physician or by other qualified trained person-
nel. The users must be trained by qualified personnel in handling the
products, and especially in the functioning and handling of speaking
tubes and valves.
Depending on the physique and anatomy of the patient, the
TRACOE comfort tubes or slightly longer TRACOE comfort plus tubes
are used.
The extra-long TRACOE comfort tubes are used, in particular, for
tracheomalacia or tracheal stenoses that are located deeper inside
the trachea.
Caution: A check by a physician at regular intervals is required, espe-
cially if the patient has a tendency to crust formation and granulation
tissue formation and/or heavy secretion.
4. Contraindications
CAUTION: Tubes with a speaking valve must not be used for laryngec-
tomised patients because these patients cannot exhale the inhaled air,
and there is a risk of asphyxiation.
The TRACOE comfort tubes are only suitable for ventilation subject to
certain conditions because they have no cuff and the locking of the

inner cannula to the 15 mm connector cannot reliably ensure that the
inner cannula is not dislocated. Therefore, if ventilation is required, the
tube should be changed to a suitable tube such as the TRACOE twist
or TRACOE twist plus.
TRACOE comfort tubes do not show on X-ray images because they do
not have an X-Ray contrast line.
5. Tubes with a Speaking Valve
The tubes with a speaking valve are used for patients with a fully or
partially intact larynx and allow the patient to speak. The inhalation
is done via the tracheostomy tube. During exhalation, the speaking
valve closes and routes the air through the natural airways. This way, a
patient with an intact anatomy will be able to speak. It is important that
the patient’s upper airways are entirely unobstructed.
TRACOE comfort speaking tubes are fenestrated and have a
speaking valve of type A or B.
TRACOE comfort tubes with a speaking valve type A have a flap
support made of silver. The flap support can be removed from the
inner cannula by pushing it outwards. For the TRACOE comfort tubes
with a speaking valve type B, the valve support can be rotated. This
mechanism allows free access to the inner lumen of the tube for both
valve types, for example for sucking out tracheal secretion.
CAUTION: A physician should decide for each individual patient if a
speaking valve can be inserted.
CAUTION: Patients who are unable to exhale on their own, must not
use a speaking valve because of the acute risk of asphyxiation.
If the patient requires additional oxygen, the product variants with an
oxygen connection can be used.
For long periods without speaking or at night, an inner cannula with a
15-mm connector or 22 mm adapter can be used, onto which a heat
and moisture exchanger can be placed. The consistent use of a heat
and moisture exchanger can significantly reduce crust forming.

6. Tubes with a Connector / Adapter
6.1 Tubes with a 15 mm Connector
TRACOE comfort tubes with a 15 mm connector are used, for example,
for the placement of a heat and moisture exchanger (HME), which
filters, moistens and heats the inhaled air (e.g. TRACOE humid assist
IV REF 642).
As an alternative to the speaking valves type A or B, a speaking
valve with a silicon membrane (e.g. TRACOE phon assist REF 650-T,
REF 650-TO or REF 655-T) can be placed on the 15-mm connector of
a fenestrated comfort tube (e.g. REF 115).
Caution: In order to loosen very tight connections, such as the connec-
tion between a heat and moisture exchanger and a 15 mm connector,
a suitable separating aid should always be used. Please note that the
tracheostomy tube might be damaged by unsuited tools.
6.2 Tubes with a 22 mm Adapter
TRACOE comfort tubes with a 22 mm adapter are also used
for attaching heat and moisture exchangers, for example the
TRACOE humid assist I REF 640-S, and speaking valves like the TRA-
COE phon assist REF 650-S and REF 655-S.
7. Application of the TRACOE comfort Tubes
7.1 Preparation
In general, before inserting the tube into the tracheostoma, you should
check if the inner cannula can be easily inserted into the outer cannula.
Please do not use any other products than the TRACOE Liquid Paraffin
REF 902 for lubrication. Other oils, for example stoma oil, might stick
the inner cannula to the outer cannula.
On one side of the neck flange, the neck strap (for example REF 903-F)
is attached. Then a tracheal compress, for example REF 910-A or -B,
is pushed over the cannula tube.
The insertion of the tube is made easier by moistening the outside of
the cannula tube with a water-soluble lubricating gel.
7.2 Inserting the Tube
Hold the tube at the neck flange with one hand and spread the
tracheostoma between the index and middle finger of the other hand.
Carefully push the tube into the tracheostoma during the inhalation.

This step is made easier if the patient’s head is slightly bent back-
wards. The head can be brought back to the straight position during
the subsequent insertion into the trachea. Finally, the tube is secured
with the neck strap by fixing the strap to the free eye of the neck flange.
Make sure that the tube is positioned free of tension in the tracheos-
toma. The position of the tube should not be changed by the neck
strap.
The removal of the tube is made easier if the patient’s head is slightly
bent backwards.
7.3 Handling of the Inner Cannula
If highly viscous secretion collects in the inner cannula, which cannot
be removed by means of suction and obstructs the airflow, there is a
risk that the tube becomes blocked. This can result in acute danger
of asphyxiation.
In this case, the inner cannula must be removed and cleaned. For this
purpose, hold the neck flange of the outer cannula with one hand. With
the other hand, rotate the inner cannula clockwise by a few millimetres
(as seen from the patient with the inserted tube) and pull the inner
cannula out of the outer cannula. The outer cannula remains in the
tracheostoma where it ensures an open and safe airway.
When reinserting the cleaned and lightly oiled inner cannula (see item
8), make sure that the inner cannula is neither twisted nor bent. Push
the neck flange of the inner cannula behind the little hook at the neck
flange of the outer cannula by slightly rotating the neck flange of the
inner cannula. This way, the inner cannula is fixed in its place (see
images 1-3, model with hook at the bottom of the neck flange).
8. Cleaning and Care
The cleaning intervals heavily depend on the main illness of the patient
as well as the secretion volume and consistency, any tendency to crust
forming and the patient’s individual needs.
At least the TRACOE comfort inner cannula should be cleaned daily.
The respective application period of the outer cannula for the particular
patient should be cleared with the physician in charge.
Caution: Always remove the tube from the tracheostoma before
cleaning.

For the detailed cleaning steps please refer to the instructions for use
of the below cleaning kits.
The TRACOE Cleaning Kits 930-A or -B with the Cleaning Powder and
REF 931-A or -B with the Concentrated Cleaning Liquid allow the easy
cleaning and care of the tubes. These kits contain a cleaning tub with
a sieve insert, a cleaning agent, cleaning swabs and a cleaning brush.
All of the items from the kits are also available separately.
Important: After the tracheostomy tube has been cleaned and dried, a
small amount (approx. 1 drop) of the REF 902 Liquid Paraffin is applied
to the outside of the inner cannula and distributed with a fluff-free
cloth until a thin covering has been achieved. Then the inner cannula
is inserted into the outer cannula and pulled out and pushed back in
several times in order to further distribute the liquid paraffin.
Caution: Make sure that the applied amount of the liquid paraffin is
as small as possible. Never apply the oil to an extent that the liquid
paraffin escapes between the inner and outer cannula and enters the
trachea. There is a possibility, albeit small, that permanent overdosing
may result in oil pneumonia.
In many cases, the TRACOE comfort tube is used for out-of-hospital
applications and domestic care. In such cases, and due to the germ
range, which is different from that in hospitals, under normal circum-
stances simplified cleaning using a commonly available, domestic,
mild and pH-neutral agent is possible.
Caution: The tubes must not be cleaned with aggressive domestic
cleaning agents, cleaning agents for dentures or agents with a high
alcohol content because these agents can impair the functioning of
the products.
Caution: TRACOE comfort tracheostomy tubes must not be sterilised.
The tube must be checked after each cleaning and before the reinser-
tion. Even tubes that exhibit only minor damage must be replaced.
Disinfection
Since the upper airways are never free of germs even in healthy
people, we recommend that you abstain from using disinfectants.

However, if disinfection seems necessary, you can access a
list of disinfectants on the website of TRACOE medical GmbH
(www.tracoe.com).
After disinfection, the tubes must be thoroughly rinsed with water in
drinking quality or with distilled water and dried.
Caution: Do not use any disinfectants, which release chloride, or
agents, which contain strong alkaline solutions or phenol derivatives.
You may thermally disinfect the tubes with a commonly available
mild agent with a neutral pH for 5 minutes at temperatures of up to
65 °C (≤ 65 °C) without using any chemical additives. This process
may result in an opaque staining, but the function of the product is
not impaired.
9. Useful Life
The tube is designed so that it can be reused for a patient several
times over a period of 29 days even after having been cleaned several
times during that period. In individual cases, the useful life heavily
depends on the patient’s illness as well as the secretion and care of
the tracheostomy tube. The regular replacement of the entire tube
should be monitored by the physician in charge. If cared for at regular
intervals, the TRACOE comfort tracheostomy tubes can be used for
up to 6 months
10. Tube Info Card
Each TRACOE comfort tube contains a tube info card with detach-
able stickers on the front and back. These labels contain information
regarding the REF no., size, length and lot no. The tube info card
should be kept separately. This will make reordering easier, and the
tube info card is also essential in the event of a complaint when it must
be enclosed with the paperwork.
11. Storage
The products must be stored in a cool and dry place. Temporary
storage for ≤ 30 days at maximum +50 °C is possible. Protect the
product from sunlight and extreme cold.
12. Disposal
The TRACOE comfort tracheostomy tubes are made of plastic materi-
als that are globally approved for medical applications. They contain

no latex or DEHP. These products may only be disposed of in accord-
ance with the valid national regulations governing waste materials.
13. Returns
Returns of used products are accepted only if accompanied by a
completed decontamination certificate. You can obtain the required
form either directly from TRACOE medical or from the website
(www.tracoe.com).
14. General Terms and Conditions
The sale, delivery and return of all TRACOE products are carried out
exclusively according to the General Terms and Conditions which can

Tracheostomiekanülen
Diese Gebrauchsanweisung dient zur Information und Anleitung von
Ärzten, Pflegepersonal, Patienten und von pflegenden Angehörigen.
Sie gilt ausschließlich für die TRACOE comfort Tracheostomiekanülen.
Bitte lesen Sie die Hinweise vor der erstmaligen Anwendung des
Produktes und heben Sie die Gebrauchsanweisung auf, damit Sie bei
Bedarf nachschlagen können.
Einpatientenprodukt: Die TRACOE comfort Tracheostomiekanülen
sind Medizinprodukte, die nur für einen Patienten bestimmt sind. Eine
mehrfache Anwendung bei ein und demselben Patienten ist zulässig.
1. Allgemeine Beschreibung
Die flexiblen, transparenten TRACOE comfort Tracheostomie-
kanülen stehen in verschiedenen Durchmessern, Längen, Ausführun-
gen und Set-Zusammenstellungen, auch in der Langzeitanwendung,
für tracheostomierte und laryngektomierte Patienten zur Verfügung.
Die Kanülen sind DEHP- und Latexfrei.
Form und Länge der Innen- und Außenkanülen sind individuell auf-
einander abgestimmt. Daher ist darauf zu achten, dass die Innen-
kanülen mit der zum gleichen Set gehörenden Außenkanüle verwendet
werden.
Die Größenangabe entspricht dem Innendurchmesser der Außen-
kanüle an der engsten Stelle (unteres Ende) in mm. Bei Verwendung
von Innenkanülen reduziert sich der Innendurchmesser um circa
1 – 1,5 mm!

Zur Sicherheit wird empfohlen, immer zwei TRACOE comfort Tra-
cheostomiekanülen als Ersatz in greifbarer Nähe zu haben. Aus
Sicherheitsgründen sollte eine dieser Kanülen einen um 1 – 2 Größen
geringeren Durchmesser aufweisen, als die im Gebrauch befindliche.
Sie wird verwendet, falls es zu Problemen beim Wiedereinsetzen der
ursprünglich gewählten Kanülengröße kommt.
Die Aufbewahrung der Wechselkanülen sollte im trockenen, gerei-
nigten Zustand in einem belüfteten Behälter erfolgen. Vor Sonnenein-
strahlung schützen.

2. Aufbau der TRACOE comfort Kanüle
An das flache Kanülenschild mit Ösen, zur Befestigung des Kanü-
lenbandes, schließt sich das luftstromführende Kanülenrohr an, das
sich zum Kanülenende hin verjüngt. Damit wird das Einführen in das
Tracheostoma erleichtert und das Kanülenende liegt nicht ständig an
der Trachealwand.
Passgenaue Innenkanülen, sofern Bestandteil des Produktes, werden
in die Außenkanüle eingeführt. Sicherheitsaspekt: Dies bietet den
Vorteil, dass eine durch Sekret oder Borken verschlossene Innenka-
nüle aus der Außenkanüle entfernt werden kann und der Luftweg des
Patienten über die noch liegende Außenkanüle immer gesichert ist.

Alle TRACOE comfort Kanülen werden mit einem Kanülenband für die
Befestigung und den sicheren Sitz der Kanüle geliefert. Es handelt
sich hierbei um ein Einmalprodukt, das nicht aufbereitet werden darf.
Sprechkanülen verfügen an der Außenkanüle über kleine Löcher,
auch Siebung genannt. Die dazu gehörigen Innenkanülen haben
korrespondierend zu der Siebung eine größere Öffnung, die Fens-
terung genannt wird. Durch die übereinander liegenden Öffnungen
kann so die Ausatemluft in die oberen Atemwege strömen.
Zur besseren Phonation verfügt die Sprechkanüle TRACOE comfort
plus zusätzlich zur Siebfensterung am Außenbogen der Kanüle über
jeweils zwei zusätzliche Löcher am Innenbogen.
Durch die Siebung der Außenkanülen passen keine Absaugkatheter,
um Verletzungen an der Trachealschleimhaut zu verhindern.
3. Bestimmungsgemäßer Gebrauch
TRACOE comfort Kanülen stabilisieren das Tracheostoma eines tra-
cheostomierten oder laryngektomierten Patienten und halten es offen.
Die Kanülenauswahl und das Einsetzen der TRACOE Produkte müs-
sen bei der Erstanwendung durch einen Arzt bzw. durch geschultes
Fachpersonal durchgeführt werden. Die Anwender müssen von
qualifiziertem Personal im Umgang mit den Produkten, speziell zur
Funktionsweise und Handhabung von Sprechkanülen und -ventilen
geschult werden.
Je nach Statur und Anatomie des Patienten werden TRACOE comfort
oder die etwas längeren TRACOE comfort plus Kanülen eingesetzt.
Die extra-langen TRACOE comfort Kanülen kommen vor allem bei
tiefer in der Trachea gelegenen Tracheomalazien / Trachealstenosen
zur Anwendung.
Achtung: Es sollte eine regelmäßige ärztliche Kontrolle erfolgen,
insbesondere wenn der Patient eine Neigung zur Bildung von Bor-
ken und Granulationsgewebe zeigt und / oder eine starke Sekretion
vorhanden ist.

4. Kontraindikationen
ACHTUNG: Für laryngektomierte Patienten dürfen keine Kanülen mit
Sprechventil verwendet werden. Sie können die eingeatmete Luft nicht
wieder ausatmen, es besteht Erstickungsgefahr.
Die TRACOE comfort Kanülen sind für die Beatmung nur bedingt
geeignet, da sie keinen Cuff haben und die Arretierung der Innen-
kanüle mit 15 mm-Konnektor nicht zuverlässig sicherstellt, dass die
Innenkanüle nicht disloziert wird. Daher sollte, wenn eine Beatmung
notwendig ist, auf eine geeignete Kanüle wie die TRACOE twist oder
TRACOE twist plus umgestellt werden.
TRACOE comfort Kanülen werden bei Röntgenaufnahme nicht
dargestellt, da diese keinen Röntgenkontraststreifen besitzen.
5. Kanülen mit Sprechventil
Die Kanülen mit Sprechventil werden bei vollständig oder teilweise
erhaltenem Kehlkopf eingesetzt und ermöglichen dem Patienten das
Sprechen. Die Einatmung erfolgt über die Tracheostomiekanüle. Bei
der Ausatmung schließt sich das Sprechventil und leitet die Luft über
die natürlichen Atemwege. Somit hat ein Patient bei intakter Anatomie,
die Möglichkeit zu sprechen. Wichtig ist, dass die oberen Atemwege
des Patienten vollständig frei sind.
TRACOE comfort Sprechkanülen haben eine Siebfensterung und ein
Sprechventil des Typs A oder Typs B.
TRACOE comfort Kanülen mit dem Sprechventil Typ A haben einen
Klappenträger aus Silber. Er lässt sich bei Bedarf durch Herausschie-
ben von der Innenkanüle lösen. Bei TRACOE comfort Kanülen mit
Sprechventil Typ B ist der Ventilträger schwenkbar. Dies ermöglicht
für beide Ventilformen den freien Zugang zum Innenlumen der Kanüle,
z. B. für die Absaugung von trachealem Sekret.
ACHTUNG: Ein Arzt sollte individuell für den jeweiligen Patienten ent-
scheiden, ob ein Sprechventil eingesetzt werden darf.
ACHTUNG: Patienten die nicht in der Lage sind selbstständig aus-
zuatmen, dürfen kein Sprechventil verwenden, da ansonsten akute
Erstickungsgefahr besteht.

Benötigt der Patient zusätzlichen Sauerstoff, können Produktvarianten
mit Sauerstoffanschluss verwendet werden.
Bei längeren Sprechpausen oder in der Nacht kann eine Innenkanüle
mit 15 mm-Konnektor bzw. 22 mm-Adapter verwendet werden, auf die
dann z. B. eine feuchte Nase aufgesetzt werden kann. Der konsequen-
te Einsatz eines HME kann die Borkenbildung erheblich reduzieren.
6. Kanülen mit Konnektor / Adapter
6.1 Kanülen mit 15 mm-Konnektor
TRACOE comfort Kanülen mit einem 15 mm-Konnektor werden z. B.
zum Aufsetzen einer künstlichen Nase als Feuchtigkeits- und Wärme-
tauscher (HME) verwendet, welche die Einatemluft filtern, befeuchten
und erwärmen (z. B. TRACOE humid assist IV REF 642).
Alternativ zu den Sprechventilen Typ A oder B kann auf den
15 mm-Konnektor einer gefensterten TRACOE comfort Kanüle (z. B.
REF 115) ein Sprechventil mit Silikonmembran aufgesteckt werden
(z. B. TRACOE phon assist REF 650-T, REF 650-TO oder REF 655-T).
Achtung: Zum Lösen von sehr fest sitzenden Verbindungen, zum
Beispiel eine künstliche Nase von einem 15 mm-Konnektor, sollte nur
eine für solche Fälle geeignete Trennhilfe benutzen werden. Grobes
Werkzeug könnte die Tracheostomiekanüle beschädigen.
6.2 Kanülen mit 22 mm-Adapter
TRACOE comfort Kanülen mit 22 mm-Adapter werden ebenfalls
zum Aufsetzen von künstlichen Nasen, z. B. TRACOE humid assist I
REF 640-S und Sprechventilen, z. B. TRACOE phon assist REF 650-S
und REF 655-S verwendet.
7. Anwendung der TRACOE comfort Kanülen
7.1 Vorbereitung
Generell sollte vor dem Einsetzen der Kanüle in das Tracheostoma
geprüft werden, ob die Innenkanüle leichtgängig in die Außenkanüle
eingeschoben werden kann.
Bitte verwenden Sie keine Alternativprodukte zum TRACOE Paraffinöl
REF 902. Andere Öle, z. B. Stomaöl, können die Innenkanüle mit der
Außenkanüle verkleben.
