Power switch (POWER)
When the POWER switch is turned ON (¢), the Power
indicator
w lights.
When the Power switch is turned ON, power is supplied to
the unit. It takes a few seconds after the power is turned on
for the unit to warm up. This is due to the built-in muting
circuit that eliminates noise during the on/off operation.

Power indicator
This indicates the set’s operating status.
The indicator flashes red for several seconds when the
power is turned on and when the position of the EQ
POWER switch
e and BALANCED INPUT switch y is
changed, indicating that the muting circuit is activated
(interrupting the speaker output). In the normal operating
mode, the indicator is orange when the EQ POWER switch
e is set to the OFF (£) position, green when it is set to
the ON (
¢) position.
Also, if the protective circuit is activated (due to a short-
circuit in the speaker output, DC output to speakers,
abnormal temperature rise, etc.), the indicator flashes red
and the speaker output is interrupted. In this case, turn the
power off immediately, then check the connections, etc.

Phono equalizer power switch (EQ POWER)
When set to the ON (¢) position, the power of the phono
equalizer circuit turns on, and when set to the OFF (
£)
position, the power of the phono equalizer circuit turns off.
When this switch is operated, the muting circuit is activated
for several seconds, interrupting the speaker output. After
flushing red, the Power indicator
w is green when this
switch is turned on, orange when it is off.
Set this switch to the ON (
¢ ) position when playing
records (analog discs). (Also set the INPUT SELECTOR
i
to the PHONO position.)
For sources other than records, we recommend setting this
switch to the OFF (
£) position for higher sound quality.

Balance control knob (BALANCE)
This knob is used to adjust the balance between the left
and right channels.
When it is set to the center position, the amplitude of the
amplifier is equal on both sides. If the volume on the right
side is too low, turn the knob to the right (,). If the volume
on the left side is too low, turn the knob to the left (.). This
will achieve an even balance on the left and right sides.

Volume control knob (VOLUME)
This knob controls the overall volume level.
Turn the knob to the right (,) to raise the volume and to the
left (.) to lower it.

BALANCED INPUT switch (BALANCED INPUT)
When set to the ON (¢) position, the source connected to
the BALANCED INPUT terminals on the rear panel is
selected, regardless of the position of the INPUT
SELECTOR
i. When set to the OFF (£) position, the
source is set to the source selected with the INPUT
SELECTOR
i. When this switch is operated, the muting
circuit is activated for several seconds, interrupting the
speaker output.

Recording output selector switch
(REC OUT SELECTOR)
Use this to select the output source for recording onto a
tape deck, etc.
• SOURSE:
Set to this position when recording. The recording output
is the source selected with the BALANCED INPUT switch
y and the INPUT SELECTOR i.
In case of recording from turntabel, set the EQ POWER
switch
e to the ON (¢) position.
• OFF:
In this position, the recording output is turned off. For
higher quality playback sound, we recommend keeping
the selector at this position when not recording.
• TAPE-1 1 2:
Use this position when making copies of tapes etc., using
two recorders. The input signal from the recorder
connected to the TAPE-1/CD-R input terminals is fed to the
TAPE-2/MD REC OUT terminals, regardless of the position
of the BALANCED INPUT switch

AC inlet receptacle (AC IN)
Connect the included power supply cord here.
Do not use any other cord than the provided power supply
cord.
NOTE:
The PMA-SA1’s speaker output has a BTL configuration,
so inverted phase signal is fed to the “>” terminal
same as noninverted phase signal is fed to the “<”
terminal. Do not use these terminals to connect a
device (such as an audio channel selector) for switching
between multiple amplifiers or for any type of
connection (speaker matrix connection, etc.) other than
the normal speaker connections (see page 9). Such
connections may result in damage.

Speaker system terminals
(SPEAKER SYSTEMS)
Connect the speaker systems here.
NOTE:
The PHONO input terminals are equipped with a short
pin-plug. Remove this plug to connect a record player.
Store the removed short pin-plug in a safe place so as
not to lose it.

Recording output terminals (REC OUT)
These are recording output terminals for connection to tape
decks or other recorders.

BALANCED INPUT terminals (BALANCED INPUT)
These are cannon input terminals for connecting a CD player or
other playback component equipped with balanced outputs.
The polarities of the pins are as follows:

Ground terminal (SIGNAL GND)
Connect the turntable’s ground wire here.
NOTE:
This terminal is used to reduce noise when a turntable,
etc., is connected.
It does not provide grounding.

Input selector switch (INPUT SELECTOR)
Use these to select the program source.
• TAPE-2/MD:
Use this position when using the tape deck, etc.,
connected to the TAPE-2/MD terminals.
• TAPE-1/CD-R:
Use this position when using the tape deck, etc.,
connected to the TAPE-1/CD-R terminals.
• PHONO:
Use this position when using the record player connected
to the PHONO terminals.
• CD-1:
Used to listen a CD player or other component that is
connected to the CD-1 terminals.
• CD-2:
Used to listen a CD player or other component that is
connected to the CD-2 terminals.
• TUNER:
Used to play a component such as an FM/AM tuner or a
TV tuner that is connected to the TUNER terminals.
• DVD/AUX:
Used to play a component such as a HiFi video player, TV
tuner or tape deck that is connected to the DVD/AUX
terminals.

Input terminals (INPUTS)
These are input terminals for CD players, turntables,
AM/FM tuners, tape decks or other playback components.
NOTE:
Set the EQ POWER switch
e to the ON (¢) position.

CONNECTIONS
Connecting the speakers
• Speaker impedance
• Use speakers with an inpedance of 4 to 16 Ω/ohms.
• The protective circuit may be activated if speakers with
other impedances are connected.
• Be sure to connect the cords between the speaker terminals
and speaker systems with the same polarities (< to <, > to
>). If not, the central sound will be weak and the position of
the different instruments will not be clear, diminishing the
stereo effect.
• When connecting the speakers, be sure that the conductors of
the speaker cords do not stick out from the terminals and
touch other terminals, each other or the rear panel.

q Peel off the sheathing from the end of the cord.
w Twist the conductors.
e Turn the speaker terminal counterclockwise to loosen it.
r Insert the conductors of the cord entirely, then turn the
terminal clockwise to tighten it.
CAUTION
Protective Circuit
This set is equipped with a high speed protective circuit.
This circuit protects the internal circuitry from damage due
to large currents flowing when the speaker terminals are not
completely connected or when an output is generated by a
short circuit. This protective circuit’s operation cuts off the
output to the speakers. In such a case, be sure to turn the
power off and check the connections to the speakers. Then
turn the power on again. After muting for several seconds,
the set will operate normally.
NOTE:
NEVER touch the speaker terminals when the power is on.
Doing so could result in electric shocks.

Cautions on Connections
• Do not plug in the power supply cord until all connections
are completed.
• Be sure to connect the left and right channels properly.
• Insert the plugs securely. Incomplete connections can result
in noise.
• The PHONO input terminals have an extremely high
sensitivity, so avoid turning up the volume when no pin plug
cords are connected. Doing so may result in induction
humming (booming) from the speakers. When pin plug
cords are not connected, insert the included short-circuit pin
plug.

PREPARATION
1. CHECKING CONNECTIONS
• Make sure that all the connections are proper by referring
to the rear panel.
• Check the polarity (positive and negative) of connections,
and the directivity of stereo separation (right cord to right
channel terminal, and left cord to left channel terminal).
• Check the directivity of pin plug cord connection.
2. SETTING OF EACH KNOB
•Turn the VOLUME knob
t counterclockwise, to minimum
position.
After checking the above items, turn on the power, the amplifier
is set in the ready mode in a few seconds.
PLAYING A RECORD
1. Set the EQ POWER switch e to “ON”.
2. Set the INPUT SELECTOR switch
i to “PHONO”.
3. Operate the turntable and play the record.
4. Turn the VOLUME knob
t to yield an appropriate volume.
PLAYING CD PLAYER
1. Set the INPUT SELECTOR switch i to “CD-1”.
2. Operate the CD player.

COPYING FROM ONE TAPE TO ANOTHER
To copy from TAPE-1/CD-R to TAPE-2/MD, set the REC OUT
SELECTOR switch

To copy from TAPE-2/MD to TAPE-1/CD-R, set the REC OUT
SELECTOR switch

TROUBLESHOOTING
Check the following before assuming there is a problem with the set.
1. Are all connections proper ?
2. Is the set being operated as described in the operating instructions ?
3. Are the speakers and input components being operated properly ?
If the set does not seem to be operating properly, check the points listed below. If these points do not apply, the set may be damaged.

Netzschalter (POWER)
Wenn der POWER-Schalter auf ON (¢) gestellt ist, leuchtet die
Netzanzeige w.
Der Verstärker wird durch Drücken dieser Taste eingeschaltet.
Nach dem Einschalten braucht das Gerät einige Sekunden, bis
es betriebsbereit ist, da hierbei der Stummschaltungsschaltkreis
zur Unterdrückung des normalerweise beim Einschalten einer
Stereoanlage auftretenden Knackgeräusches aktiviert wird.

Netzanzeige (Power indicator)
Hier wird der Betriebsstatus des Geräts angezeigt. Die Anzeige
blinkt für mehrere Sekunden rot, wenn die Stromversorgung
eingeschaltet wird und die Stellung des EQ POWER-Schalters
e und des BALANCED INPUT-Schalters y verändert wird, um
darauf hinzuweisen, dass der Stummschaltungsschaltkreis
aktiviert wurde (wodurch die Lautsprecherausgabe
unterbrochen wird). Im normalen Betriebsstatus leuchtet die
Anzeige orange, wenn der EQ POWER-Schalter e in die
Stellung OFF (£), und grün, wenn der Schalter in die Stellung
ON (¢) gebracht wird.
Auch wenn der Schutzschaltkreis aktiviert wird (aufgrund eines
Kurzschlusses bei der Lautsprecherausgabe oder beim
Gleichstromausgang an den Lautsprechern, aufgrund eines
anormalen Temperaturanstiegs o. Ä.), blinkt die Anzeige rot und
die Lautsprecherausgabe wird unterbrochen. Schalten Sie in
einem solchen Fall die Stromversorgung sofort aus und
überprüfen Sie anschließend die Anschlüsse o. Ä.

Phono-Equalizer-Netzschalter (EQ POWER)
Bei der Einstellung des Schalters auf die Stellung ON (¢)
schaltet sich die Stromversorgung des Phono-Equalizer-
Schaltkreises ein, und bei der Einstellung auf die Stellung OFF
(£) schaltet sich die Stromversorgung des Phono-Equalizer-
Schaltkreises aus.
Beim Verwenden dieses Schalters wird der Stummschaltungsschaltkreis
für mehrere Sekunden aktiviert, wodurch die Lautsprecherausgabe
unterbrochen wird. Nachdem die Netzanzeige w rot blinkt, leuchtet sie
beim Einschalten dieses Schalters grün und beim Ausschalten orange.
Stellen Sie diesen Schalter in die Stellung ON (¢), wenn Sie
Schallplatten (analoge Schallplatten) wiedergeben lassen
möchten. (Stellen Sie darüber hinaus auch den INPUT
SELECTOR i auf die Stellung PHONO.)
Bei anderen Quellen als Schallplatten empfehlen wir die
Einstellung dieses Schalters auf die Stellung OFF (£), um eine
bessere Klangqualität zu erzielen.

Balance-Steuerungsknopf (BALANCE)
Mit diesem Regler wird die Balance zwischen linkem und
rechtem Kanal eingestellt. In der mittleren Stellung ist die
Verstärkung für beide Kanäle gleich.
Wenn die Lautstärke des rechten Kanals zu niedrig ist, muss
der Regler nach rechts (,) gedreht werden, bei zu niedrigen
Lautstärke des linken Kanals nach links (.). Hierdurch lässt
sich die Balance zwischen linkem und rechtem Kanal wieder
herstellen.

Lautstärke-Steuerungsknopf (VOLUME)
Mit diesem Regler wird die Gesamtlautstärke eingestellt.
Die Lautstärke wird durch Drehen des Reglers nach rechts (,)
angehoben und durch Drehen nach links (.) vermindert.

BALANCED INPUT-Schalter
(BALANCED INPUT)
Wenn der Schalter auf die Stellung ON (¢) eingestellt ist, wird
die an die BALANCED INPUT-Anschlüsse angeschlossene
Quelle ausgegeben, und das unabhängig von der Stellung des
INPUT SELECTOR i. Wenn der Schalter auf die Stellung OFF
(£) eingestellt ist, wird die Quelle auf die durch den INPUT
SELECTOR i ausgewählte Quelle eingestellt. Beim Bedienen
dieses Schalters wird der Stummschaltungsschaltkreis für
mehrere Sekunden aktiviert, wodurch die Lautsprecherausgabe
unterbrochen wird.

Aufnahme-Ausgangswähler (REC OUT SELECTOR)
Wählen Sie mit diesem Wähler die Ausgangsquelle für die
Aufnahme mit einem Kassettendeck o. Ä. aus.
• SOURCE:
Stellen Sie den Schalter bei der Aufnahme auf diese Stellung.
Beim Aufnahmeausgang handelt es sich um die durch den
BALANCED INPUT-Schalter y und den INPUT SELECTOR
i ausgewählte Quelle.
Stellen Sie den EQ POWER-Schalter e bei einer
Schallplattenaufnahme auf die Stellung ON (¢).
• OFF:
In dieser Stellung wird der Aufnahmeausgang ausgeschaltet.
Zugunsten einer Wiedergabe besserer Qualität empfehlen
wir Ihnen, den Wähler in dieser Stellung zu belassen, wenn
Sie keine Aufnahme durchführen.
• TAPE-1 1 2:
Verwenden Sie diese Stellung, wenn Sie Kassetten o. Ä.
unter Verwendung von zwei Recordern kopieren. Das
Eingangssignal des an die TAPE-1/CD-R -Eingangsanschlüsse
angeschlossenen Recorders wird unabhängig von der
Stellung des BALANCED INPUT-Schalters y und des INPUT
SELECTOR i an die TAPE-2/MD REC OUT-Anschlüsse
angelegt.
• TAPE-2 1 1:
Verwenden Sie diese Stellung, wenn Sie Kassetten o. Ä. unter
Verwendung von zwei Recordern kopieren. Das Eingangssignal
des an die TAPE-2/MD REC OUT-Anschlüsse angeschlossenen
Recorders wird unabhängig von der Stellung des BALANCED
INPUT-Schalters y und des INPUT SELECTOR i an die

Schließen Sie die Lautsprechersysteme hier an.
HINWEIS:
Die PHONO-Eingangsanschlüsse sind mit einem kurzen
Stiftstecker ausgestattet. Entfernen Sie diesen Stecker für
den Anschluss eines Plattenspielers. Bewahren Sie den
entfernten Stiftstecker an einem sicheren Ort auf, an dem
Sie ihn nicht verlieren.

BALANCED INPUT-Anschlüsse
(BALANCED INPUT)
Hierbei handelt es sich um Cannon-Eingangsanschlüsse für den
Anschluss eines CD-Players oder einer anderen
Wiedergabekomponente, die mit symmetrischen Ausgängen
ausgestattet ist.
Die Polarität der Stifte ist wie folgt:
HINWEIS:
Die Lautsprecherausgabe des PMA-SA1 weist eine
BTLKonfiguration auf, damit das invertierte Phasensignal an
den “> ”-Anschluss angelegt wird, während das nicht
invertierte Phasensignal an den “<”-Anschluss angelegt
wird. Verwenden Sie diese Anschlüsse nicht, um ein Gerät
(wie beispielsweise einen Audiokanal-Wähler) für die
Umschaltung zwischen mehreren Verstärkern oder für
irgend einen Anschluss (Lautsprechermatrix-Anschluss o.
Ä.) anzuschließen; verwenden Sie sie ausschließlich für
normale Lautsprecheranschlüsse (siehe Seite 19). Andere
Anschlüsse könnten Beschädigungen zur Folge haben.

Schließen Sie die Erdungsleitung des Plattenspielers hier an.

Anschluss der Lautsprecher
• Lautsprecherimpedanz
•Verwenden Sie Lautsprecher mit einer Impedanz von 4 bis 16
Ω/Ohm.
• Die Schutzschaltung könnte aktiviert werden, wenn Sie
Lautsprecher mit einer anderen Impedanz verwenden.
• Achten Sie darauf, dass Sie die Kabel zwischen den
Lautsprecheranschlüssen und den Lautsprechersystemen mit den
gleichen Polaritäten (< an <, > an >) anschließen. Andernfalls ist
der Mittelklang schwach und die Position der verschiedenen
Instrumente ist undeutlich. Dies verringert den Stereo-Effekt.
• Stellen Sie beim Anschluss der Lautsprecher bitte sicher, dass die
Leitungen der Lautsprecherkabel nicht aus den Anschlüssen
herausragen und andere Anschlüsse, sich gegenseitig oder die
Geräterückseite berühren.
• Anschluss der Lautsprecherkabel
q Streifen Sie die Ummantelung vom Ende des Kabels ab.
w Verdrehen Sie die Leitungen.
e Drehen Sie den Lautsprecheranschluss entgegen dem
Uhrzeigersinn, um ihn zu lösen.
r Setzen Sie die Leitungen des Kabels vollständig ein und drehen
Sie den Anschluss anschließend im Uhrzeigersinn, um ihn
anzuziehen.
VORSICHT
Schutzschaltung
Dieses Gerät ist mit einer Hochgeschwindigkeitsschutzschaltung
versehen. Dieser Schaltkreis schützt den inneren Schaltkreis vor
durch hohe Ströme verursachte Beschädigungen, die bei einem
nicht vollständigen Anschluss der Lautsprecheranschlüsse oder
bei einer durch einen Kurzschluss verursachten Ausgabe
auftreten können. Bei Einsatz dieser Schutzschaltung wird der
Ausgang zu den Lautsprecher abgeschnitten. Achten Sie in einem
solchen Fall darauf, dass der Netzanschluss des Geräts
ausgeschaltet wird und dass die Anschlüsse zu den
Lautsprechern überprüft werden. Schalten Sie den Netzanschluss
dann wieder ein. Nach der mehrere Sekunden andauernden
Stummschaltung funktioniert das Gerät wieder normal.
HINWEIS:
Berühren Sie die Lautsprecheranschlüsse NIEMALS, wenn die
Stromversorgung eingeschaltet ist.

Vorsichtsmaßnahmen für die Anschlüsse
• Schließen Sie das Netzkabel erst an, nachdem Sie alle anderen
Anschlüsse vorgenommen haben.
• Achten Sie darauf, dass Sie die linken und rechten Kanäle richtig
anschließen.
• Setzen Sie die Stecker fest ein. Lose Anschlüsse können
Störungen verursachen.
• Die PHONO-Eingangsanschlüsse weisen eine extrem hohe
Empfindlichkeit auf; vermeiden Sie bitte aus diesem Grund das
Anheben der Lautstärke, wenn keine Stiftstecker-Kabel
angeschlossen sind. Andernfalls kann es zu einem
Induktionsbrummen (Dröhnen) von den Lautsprechern kommen.
Setzen Sie für den Fall, dass keine Stiftsteckerkabel angeschlossen
sind, die mitgelieferten Kurzschluss-Stiftstecker ein.

VORBEREITUNG
1. ÜBERPRÜFUNG DER ANSCHLÜSSE
•Vergewissern Sie sich durch einen Vergleich mit der Rückseite,
ob alle Anschlüsse ordnungsgemäß durchgeführt wurden.
• Überprüfen Sie die Polarität (positiv und negativ) der
Anschlüsse und die Richtwirkung der Stereotrennung (rechtes
Kabel zum Anschluss des rechten Kanals und linkes Kabel zum
Anschluss des linke Kanals).
• Überprüfen Sie die Richtwirkung des Stiftkabel-Anschlusses.
2. EINSTELLUNG DER EINZELNEN KNÖPFEB
•Drehen Sie den Lautstärkeregler t entgegen den
Uhrzeigersinn auf die Minimum-Stellung.
Schalten Sie den Strom nach Überprüfung der oben aufgeführten
Punkte ein. Der Verstärker schaltet sich dann innerhalb von wenigen
Sekunden in die Betriebsbereitschaft.
WIEDERGABE EINER SCHALLPLATTE
1. Stellen Sie den EQ POWER-Schalter e auf “ON”.
2. Stellen Sie den Eingangswähler (INPUT SELECTOR) i auf die
Stellung ”PHONO” (Plattenspieler).
