Replacement of battery
The mounting plate makes it easy to pull down the smoke alarm for cleaning and
for replacement of the battery. As an extra safety precaution, the smoke alarm
cannot be mounted without a battery. The smoke alarm requires one 9 VDC
battery (included – mounted in the battery-compartment).
Please note: At first time installation simply remove the plastic strip between the
terminals and the contact before mounting the smoke alarm.
Note: For optimal detection the smoke alarm should be installed in a suitable
location as described above.
After mounting and after every battery change, test the smoke alarm by pressing
the red test button until a penetrating, clear signal is heard. Make sure that the
red test button flashes once a minute. When the alarm is set-off, a penetrating,
rapidly pulsating signal is given out (min 95 dB/1m). The alarm can be stopped by
pressing the red test button.
Maintenance
The following guidelines will help you care for the JACOB JENSENTM Smoke Alarm
so that you can enjoy using it for many years.
1. Test the smoke alarm once every month – preferably once every week e.g.
when doing the vacuuming. This can be done by pressing the red test button
for at least 10 seconds or by blowing smoke into the alarm.
2. Always test the smoke alarm when returning from a vacation or a trip.
3. Clean the smoke alarm regularly by wiping with a soft cloth or vacuum
carefully. Do not immerse the smoke alarm in water.
4. The lifetime of the battery is approx 1 year.
Approximately one month prior to the battery running flat, the alarm beeps
briefly once every minute. The alarm is still functioning but the signal indicates
that the battery needs to be replaced. The battery has to be 9V of a good
quality 6F22 or 6LR22 e.g. Duracell MN 1604 or Energizer 522. Always test the
smoke alarm after changing the battery.

Prior to fire
Plan and practise an escape route.
Agree a place to meet and remember that a smoke alarm does not put out a fire.
Is fire-fighting equipment available in your home? Remember that even a small
amount of smoke can be fatal.
In case of fire
Save – warn – put out
1. Warn anyone who might be in danger.
2. Notify the fire brigade. Always keep the number for the fire brigade by the
telephone.
3. If possible, try to put out the fire with your fire fighting equipment. Isolate
the fire by closing doors and windows to the room on fire. Any closed door to
the room on fire can prevent the fire from spreading.
4. Make sure that someone is available to guide the fire brigade when they
arrive.
If you are unable to get out of the house - go into a room with windows
facing the road, close the door and shout out for help. Don't waste time
trying to pick up valuables or possessions, your life is more important.
5. Always close the doors behind you.
6. Use towels, sheets or clothes to block any gaps under the door to help stop
smoke spreading into the room.
7. Where smoke is dense, get down to the floor where the smoke is not usually
so thick as smoke rises.
8. Cover your mouth and nose with a damp cloth.
9. Stay calm - do not panic.
