Conditionsthatrequireimmediateaction
Productscanbecomedamagedduetomisuseorneglect.Someproduct
damageisseriousenoughthattheproductshouldnotbeusedagainuntil
ithasbeeninspectedand,ifnecessary,repairedbyanAuthorizedService
Provider.
Aswithanyelectronicdevice,paycloseattentiontotheproductwhenitis
turnedon.Onveryrareoccasions,youmightnoticeanodororseeapuff
ofsmokeorsparksventfromyourproduct.Oryoumighthearsoundslike
popping,cracking,orhissing.Theseconditionsmightmerelymeanthatan
internalelectroniccomponenthasfailedinasafeandcontrolledmanner.Or,
theymightindicateapotentialsafetyissue.However,donottakerisksor

Frequentlyinspectyourcomputeranditscomponentsfordamage,wear,

Signsthatliquidhasbeenspilledoranobjecthasfallenontothecomputer
product,thepowercord,orpoweradapter.
Thecomputerproduct,powercord,orpoweradapterhasbeenexposedto
water.
Theproducthasbeendroppedordamagedinanyway.
Theproductdoesnotoperatenormallywhenyoufollowtheoperating
instructions.

Serviceandupgrades
Donotattempttoserviceaproductyourselfunlessinstructedtodosobythe
CustomerSupportCenteroryourdocumentation.OnlyuseaServiceProvider
whoisapprovedtorepairyourparticularproduct.

Upgradestypicallyarereferredtoasoptions.Replacementpartsapproved
forcustomerinstallationarereferredtoasCustomerReplaceableUnits,or
CRUs.Lenovoprovidesdocumentationwithinstructionswhenitisappropriate
forcustomerstoinstalloptionsorreplaceCRUs.Youmustcloselyfollowall
instructionswheninstallingorreplacingparts.TheOffstateofapowerindicator
doesnotnecessarilymeanthatvoltagelevelsinsideaproductarezero.Before
youremovethecoversfromaproductequippedwithapowercord,alwaysmake
surethatthepoweristurnedoffandthattheproductisunpluggedfromany

Althoughtherearenomovingpartsinyourcomputerafterthepowercordhas
beendisconnected,thefollowingwarningsarerequiredforyoursafety.

BeforereplacinganyCRUs,turnoffthecomputerandwaitthreetove
minutestoletthecomputercoolbeforeopeningthecover.
Staticelectricityprevention
Staticelectricity,althoughharmlesstoyou,canseriouslydamagecomputer
componentsandoptions.Improperhandlingofstatic-sensitivepartscancause
damagetothepart.WhenyouunpackanoptionorCRU,donotopenthe
static-protectivepackagecontainingthepartuntiltheinstructionsdirectyouto
installit.
WhenyouhandleoptionsorCRUs,orperformanyworkinsidethecomputer,take
thefollowingprecautionstoavoidstatic-electricitydamage:

Limityourmovement.Movementcancausestaticelectricitytobuildup
aroundyou.
Alwayshandlecomponentscarefully.Handleadapters,memorymodules,and
othercircuitboardsbytheedges.Nevertouchexposedcircuitry.
Preventothersfromtouchingcomponents.
Whenyouinstallastatic-sensitiveoptionorCRU,touchthestatic-protective
packagecontainingtheparttoametalexpansion-slotcoverorotherunpainted
metalsurfaceonthecomputerforatleasttwoseconds.Thisreducesstatic
electricityinthepackageandyourbody.
Whenpossible,removethestatic-sensitivepartfromthestatic-protective
packagingandinstallthepartwithoutsettingitdown.Whenthisisnot
possible,placethestatic-protectivepackagingonasmooth,levelsurface
andplacethepartonit.
Donotplacethepartonthecomputercoverorothermetalsurface.
Powercordsandpoweradapters
Useonlythepowercordsandpoweradapterssuppliedbytheproduct
manufacturer.
Thepowercordsshallbesafetyapproved.ForGermany,itshallbeH05VV-F,
3G,0.75mm

,orbetter.Forothercountries,thesuitabletypesshallbeused
accordingly.
Neverwrapapowercordaroundapoweradapterorotherobject.Doingsocan
stressthecordinwaysthatcancausethecordtofray,crack,orcrimp.This
canpresentasafetyhazard.
Alwaysroutepowercordssothattheywillnotbewalkedon,trippedover,or
pinchedbyobjects.
Protectpowercordandpoweradaptersfromliquids.Forinstance,donotleave
yourpowercordorpoweradapternearsinks,tubs,toilets,oronoorsthatare
cleanedwithliquidcleansers.Liquidscancauseashortcircuit,particularlyifthe
powercordorpoweradapterhasbeenstressedbymisuse.Liquidsalsocan
causegradualcorrosionofpowercordterminalsand/ortheconnectorterminals
onapoweradapter,whichcaneventuallyresultinoverheating.
Alwaysconnectpowercordsandsignalcablesinthecorrectorderandensurethat
allpowercordconnectorsaresecurelyandcompletelypluggedintoreceptacles.
Donotuseanypoweradapterthatshowscorrosionattheacinputpinsorshows
signsofoverheating(suchasdeformedplastic)attheacinputoranywhereon
thepoweradapter.

Donotuseanypowercordswheretheelectricalcontactsoneitherendshow
signsofcorrosionoroverheatingorwherethepowercordappearstohavebeen
damagedinanyway.
Voltage-selectionswitch
Somecomputersareequippedwithavoltage-selectionswitchlocatednearthe
power-cordconnectionpointonthecomputerandsomecomputersdonot
haveavoltage-selectionswitch.Beforeyouinstallyourcomputerorrelocate
yourcomputertoanothercountryorregion,youmustbecertainthatyouhave
matchedyourcomputertothevoltageavailableatyourelectricaloutlet.
CAUTION:
Youmustknowthevoltageoftheelectricalconnection(outlet)whereyour
computerwillbeconnected.Ifyoudonotknowthevoltage,contactyour
localelectriccompanyorrefertoofcialWebsitesorotherliteraturefor
travelerstothecountryorregionwhereyouarelocated.
Ifyourcomputerhasavoltage-selectionswitch,youmustsettheswitchtomatch
thevoltageavailableatyourelectricaloutlet.Settingthevoltage-selectionswitch
incorrectlywillcausethecomputertomalfunctionandmightcausepermanent
damagetothecomputer.Donotconnectthecomputertoanelectricaloutletuntil
youhaveveriedthatthevoltage-selectionswitchsettingmatchesthevoltage
availableattheelectricaloutlets.
Ifyourcomputerdoesnothaveavoltage-selectionswitch,inspectthe
voltage-ratinglabelonthebottomofthecomputerandnotethefollowing:
Ifthevoltage-ratinglabelshowsarangeofeither“100-127V”or“200-240V,
youmustensurethatthevoltageprovidedattheelectricaloutletmatchesthe
voltageratingonthecomputerlabel.Ifitdoesnotmatch,donotattemptto
connectthecomputertotheelectricaloutlet,unlessanexternaldevicesuch
asavoltage-convertingtransformerisused.
Ifthevoltage-ratinglabelshowsadualrangeof“100-127V”and“200-240
V,thissigniesthatthecomputerissuitableforworldwideoperationand
thecomputerwillautomaticallyadjusttothevoltageattheelectricaloutlet
regardlessofthecountryorregionwherethecomputerisbeingconnected.
Extensioncordsandrelateddevices
Ensurethatextensioncords,surgeprotectors,uninterruptiblepowersupplies,and
powerstripsthatyouuseareratedtohandletheelectricalrequirementsofthe
product.Neveroverloadthesedevices.Ifpowerstripsareused,theloadshould
notexceedthepowerstripinputrating.Consultanelectricianformoreinformation
ifyouhavequestionsaboutpowerloads,powerrequirements,andinputratings.

Plugsandoutlets
Ifareceptacle(poweroutlet)thatyouintendtousewithyourcomputerequipment
appearstobedamagedorcorroded,donotusetheoutletuntilitisreplacedby
aqualiedelectrician.
Donotbendormodifytheplug.Iftheplugisdamaged,contactthemanufacturer
toobtainareplacement.
Donotshareanelectricaloutletwithotherhomeorcommercialappliancesthat
drawlargeamountsofelectricity;otherwise,unstablevoltagemightdamageyour
computer,data,orattacheddevices.
Someproductsareequippedwithathree-prongedplug.Thisplugtsonlyinto
agroundedelectricaloutlet.Thisisasafetyfeature.Donotdefeatthissafety
featurebytryingtoinsertitintoanon-groundedoutlet.Ifyoucannotinsertthe
plugintotheoutlet,contactanelectricianforanapprovedoutletadapteror
toreplacetheoutletwithonethatenablesthissafetyfeature.Neveroverload
anelectricaloutlet.Theoverallsystemloadshouldnotexceed80percentof
thebranchcircuitrating.Consultanelectricianformoreinformationifyouhave
questionsaboutpowerloadsandbranchcircuitratings.
Besurethatthepoweroutletyouareusingisproperlywired,easilyaccessible,
andlocatedclosetotheequipment.Donotfullyextendpowercordsinaway
thatwillstressthecords.
Besurethatthepoweroutletprovidesthecorrectvoltageandcurrentforthe
productyouareinstalling.
Carefullyconnectanddisconnecttheequipmentfromtheelectricaloutlet.
Externaldevices
DonotconnectordisconnectanyexternaldevicecablesotherthanUniversal
SerialBus(USB)and1394cableswhilethecomputerpowerison;otherwise,you
mightdamageyourcomputer.Toavoidpossibledamagetoattacheddevices,
waitatleastvesecondsafterthecomputerisshutdowntodisconnectexternal
devices.
Batteries
AllpersonalcomputersmanufacturedbyLenovocontainanon-rechargeable
coincellbatterytoprovidepowertothesystemclock.Inaddition,manymobile
products,suchasnotebookcomputers,utilizearechargeablebatterypackto
providesystempowerwheninportablemode.BatteriessuppliedbyLenovofor
usewithyourproducthavebeentestedforcompatibilityandshouldonlybe
replacedwithapprovedparts.
Neverattempttoopenorserviceanybattery.Donotcrush,puncture,orincinerate
batteriesorshortcircuitthemetalcontacts.Donotexposethebatterytowater

orotherliquids.Onlyrechargethebatterypackstrictlyaccordingtoinstructions
includedintheproductdocumentation.
Batteryabuseormishandlingcancausethebatterytooverheat,whichcancause
gassesorameto“vent”fromthebatterypackorcoincell.Ifyourbatteryis
damaged,orifyounoticeanydischargefromyourbatteryorthebuildupofforeign
materialsonthebatteryleads,stopusingthebatteryandobtainareplacement
fromthebatterymanufacturer.
Batteriescandegradewhentheyareleftunusedforlongperiodsoftime.For
somerechargeablebatteries(particularlyLithiumIonbatteries),leavingabattery
unusedinadischargedstatecouldincreasetheriskofabatteryshortcircuit,
whichcouldshortenthelifeofthebatteryandcanalsoposeasafetyhazard.Do
notletrechargeableLithium-Ionbatteriescompletelydischargeorstorethese
batteriesinadischargedstate.
Heatandproductventilation
Computers,poweradapters,andmanyaccessoriescangenerateheatwhen
turnedonandwhenbatteriesarecharging.Alwaysfollowthesebasicprecautions:
Donotleaveyourcomputer,poweradapter,oraccessoriesincontactwith
yourlaporanypartofyourbodyforanextendedperiodwhentheproducts
arefunctioningorwhenthebatteryischarging.Yourcomputer,poweradapter,
andmanyaccessoriesproducesomeheatduringnormaloperation.Extended
contactwiththebodycouldcausediscomfortor,potentially,askinburn.
Donotchargethebatteryoroperateyourcomputer,poweradapter,or
accessoriesnearammablematerialsorinexplosiveenvironments.
Ventilationslots,fans,andheatsinksareprovidedwiththeproductforsafety,
comfort,andreliableoperation.Thesefeaturesmightinadvertentlybecome
blockedbyplacingtheproductonabed,sofa,carpet,orotherexiblesurface.
Neverblock,cover,ordisablethesefeatures.
Inspectyourdesktopcomputerfordustaccumulationatleastonceeverythree
months.Beforeinspectingyourcomputer,turnoffthepowerandunplugthe
computer'spowercordfromtheelectricaloutlet;thenremoveanydustfrom
ventsandperforationsinthebezel.Ifyounoticeexternaldustaccumulation,then
examineandremovedustfromtheinsideofthecomputerincludingheatsinkinlet
ns,powersupplyvents,andfans.Alwaysturnoffandunplugthecomputer
beforeopeningthecover.Ifpossible,avoidoperatingyourcomputerwithin
twofeetofhigh-trafcareas.Ifyoumustoperateyourcomputerinorneara
high-trafcarea,inspectand,ifnecessary,cleanyourcomputermorefrequently.
Foryoursafetyandtomaintainoptimumcomputerperformance,alwaysfollow
thesebasicprecautionswithyourdesktopcomputer:
Keepthecoverclosedwheneverthecomputerispluggedin.
Regularlyinspecttheoutsideofthecomputerfordustaccumulation.

cleaningsmightberequiredforcomputersindustyorhigh-trafcareas.
Donotrestrictorblockanyventilationopenings.
Donotstoreoroperateyourcomputerinsidefurniture,asthismightincrease
theriskofoverheating.
Airowtemperaturesintothecomputershouldnotexceed35(95).
Donotinstallairltrationdevices.Theymayinterferewithpropercooling.
Operatingenvironment
Theoptimalenvironmentinwhichtouseyourcomputeris10-35(50-95)
withhumidityrangingbetween35%and80%.Ifyourcomputerisstoredor
transportedintemperatureslessthan10(50),allowthecoldcomputertorise
slowlytoanoptimaloperatingtemperatureof10-35(50-95)beforeuse.
Thisprocesscouldtaketwohoursinextremeconditions.Failuretoallowyour
computertorisetoanoptimaloperatingtemperaturebeforeusecouldresultin
irreparabledamagetoyourcomputer.
Ifpossible,placeyourcomputerinawell-ventilatedanddryareawithoutdirect
exposuretosunshine.
Keepelectricalappliancessuchasanelectricfan,radio,high-poweredspeakers,
airconditioner,andmicrowaveovenawayfromyourcomputerbecausethestrong
magneticeldsgeneratedbytheseappliancescandamagethemonitoranddata
ontheharddiskdrive.
Donotplaceanybeveragesontopoforbesidethecomputerorotherattached
devices.Ifliquidisspilledonorinthecomputeroranattacheddevice,ashort
circuitorotherdamagemightoccur.
Donoteatorsmokeoveryourkeyboard.Particlesthatfallintoyourkeyboard
cancausedamage.
